User Guide

PicoPhrase helps you study audio or video one subtitle sentence at a time. Your media, subtitles, progress, collections, settings, cached explanations, and learning history stay on your device.

1. Choose media

• Local media: choose a folder containing an audio or video file and matching SRT or VTT subtitles.
• YouTube video: accept the YouTube notice, paste a YouTube link, then import or paste SRT/VTT subtitles. PicoPhrase does not automatically download YouTube subtitles in the Play release.

2. Main controls

• ⏮ Previous: jump to the previous subtitle sentence.
• ↔ Sentence mode: play only the current subtitle sentence and stop at its subtitle end time.
• ✦ AI: ask your selected AI provider to explain the current sentence. Tap again to stop a request or regenerate an answer.
• ▶ / ❚❚ / ↻: play or pause normally. In Sentence mode, pause mid-sentence, resume from that position, or replay from the start after the sentence finishes. The keyboard Up key performs the same action.
• CC: show or hide subtitles. The P / T / P+T button switches primary, translation, or bilingual subtitles when both tracks are available.
• ⏭ Next: jump to the next subtitle sentence.
• ⛶ Fullscreen: open the landscape study view.

Tap a sentence in the subtitle list to jump directly to it. In Collection, each sentence has one button for its original-media segment and another for local TTS, both without closing the window. Automatic subtitle matching uses only <media>.srt/.vtt and <media>-translation.srt/.vtt; any file can still be selected manually.

3. AI explanations

Open Settings → AI, choose OpenAI, Gemini, GLM, or a custom OpenAI-compatible service, enter your own API key and model, then tap Test connection. The first explanation for each provider shows exactly what subtitle context will be sent. Keys are encrypted on your device.

Free sends each request only to the Provider you selected. Pro can try another configured Provider after a failure, but only when you previously saved that Provider's key and accepted its own data notice.

4. Free and Pro

Free includes local media, Primary subtitles, basic phrase playback, Collection basics, and direct AI explanations using your own Provider key. Pro adds translation/bilingual subtitles, advanced sentence and Section practice, local background playback, a sleep timer, private Learning Insights, Collection listening drills, playback speed and control layouts, YouTube study, English Wiktionary lookup, and approved multi-Provider fallback.

Eligible Google Play accounts can start one 14-day trial with either the monthly or annual plan. Google Play shows the localized price and renewal period before confirmation, handles eligibility and payment, and lets you cancel or manage the subscription. Uninstalling does not create a new trial.

5. Speech and settings

• Settings → Display: adjust subtitle sizes. Sentence playback stops at the subtitle end by default; an optional correction is stored separately for each media item.
• Settings → Speech: leave the language on Auto to follow the current primary subtitles and restore the last Android voice chosen for each language, or enter a BCP-47 tag to lock the language; speech rate is also configurable.
• Settings → About: scroll through help and privacy actions, prepare a feedback email with an optional contact, up to five screenshots, and sanitized diagnostics, export/import a local backup that never contains API keys, or open Android's app-data screen.

6. Privacy, export, and deletion

AI, YouTube, English Wiktionary, and Google Play subscription checks are the optional network features. Android cloud backup and device transfer are disabled. Settings → About → Export backup creates a local copy of settings, Sections, Collection, saved online subtitles, and cached explanations; Provider API keys and subscription entitlement are never included. Learning Insights has a separate explicit history export and is not included in the app backup. Delete a provider key in AI settings, clear or export history in Insights, delete saved items in the title menu, or clear everything through Android Settings → Apps → PicoPhrase → Storage → Clear storage.

在 Settings → AI 中选择服务商、填写自己的 API Key 和模型并测试连接；Speech 默认使用 Auto 跟随原文字幕，并分别记住法语、英语等语言上次选择的安卓语音，也可以锁定语言和调整语速；在可上下滑动的 About 中可以填写反馈、添加最多 5 张截图并由自己的邮件应用发送，也可以打开说明与隐私页面、导出/导入不含 API Key 的本地备份、导出脱敏诊断，或进入安卓应用数据管理。
